How to Write a Module C Reflection

In Module C: The Craft of Writing, we are required to compose a reflection to go along with our text. There is a strict formula we can follow to ensure we can maximise the marks available to receive.

Everything to do with the reflection depends on your chosen purpose. As the writer, you must truly understand the purpose of your text. Have you created it to inform or persuade, or have you created it to explore a topic?

The General Structure

  • Introduction
    • The first sentence of your introduction should present to the reader the purpose of your text. The best way to do this is to state, "The purpose of my text ‘…’ is to …"
    • Then, you must explain how your purpose relates to the question.
    • Finally, as part of your introduction, you must select stylistic features represented in your mentor texts (texts you have studied in class - every school will have studied alternate texts) and how they help you achieve your purpose.
  • Body Paragraphs
    • Refer to one stylistic feature you have used from your mentor text and the reason you have implemented it.
    • State how you have manipulated the technique from your mentor text to achieve your purpose and how it answers the question (if there is one).
    • State where you have used this feature in your text, and explain the effect it has on the reader in relation to your purpose.
  • Conclusion
    • The conclusion does not need to be complicated, simply restate your purpose and how you have used stylistic features from your mentor texts to achieve this purpose and answer the question.

It is important to note that the structure of the reflection depends on the allocated amount of marks for the reflection.

  • (5) Mark reflections - Need an intro, one body paragraph and a conclusion
  • (8) Mark reflections - Need an intro, two body paragraphs and a conclusion
  • (10) Mark reflections - Need an intro, two body paragraphs and a conclusion
    • The analysis contained in the body paragraphs for a 10-mark reflection should be more extensive than that of an 8-marker

Ultimately, the reflection is an examination of how successful your text is in answering a question and achieving a purpose. If you can consistently refer to your purpose and question, you have a great base to achieve a band 6 result.
